What This Actually Looks Like

An aide arrives at a time you've agreed. While she's there she puts a load of laundry on, changes the bed, clears the dishes from the last few meals and wipes down the bathroom. She moves the shoes and the stack of mail off the hallway floor, because that's where your mother walks at night.

It isn't deep cleaning, and it isn't meant to be. The point is a home that stays functional and safe from one week to the next, rather than one that gets rescued every few months.

Light housekeeping is about safety and daily living, not about a spotless house. Here's exactly where the line falls.

This service covers

  • Laundry, linens, dishes and keeping the kitchen usable
  • Surface cleaning in the bathroom and the rooms in daily use
  • Clearing clutter and trip hazards from the way through the house
  • Doing all of it alongside personal care, meals and the rest of the visit

This service does not cover

  • Deep cleaning, carpet shampooing, window washing or heavy scrubbing — that is a job for a cleaning service
  • Yard work, snow shoveling or anything else outdoors
  • A hoarding situation, which needs specialized help rather than tidying
  • A home that needs repairs or other work before an aide can be safe there

Questions About Light Housekeeping

Do you do deep cleaning or outdoor work?
No. We keep the home tidy, safe and functional. Deep cleaning, carpet shampooing, window washing, heavy scrubbing, yard work and snow shoveling are outside what non-medical home care covers.
Will this actually reduce the risk of a fall?
That is the point of it. A lot of falls at home come from clutter, spills and things left on the floor. Consistent tidying and clear paths take those away.
Can housekeeping be the only thing we book?
It's provided as part of a care plan, often alongside personal care, meals or companionship. At the free in-home visit we'll recommend what's realistic and safe for your parent.
My mother has been hoarding. Can you help?
Not with the hoarding itself. That needs specialized help, not light housekeeping. If it's making the home unsafe, we'll say so honestly at the first visit and point you toward the right resources.
What if my father won't let anyone touch his things?
That's common. We work within what he'll accept and build trust slowly. At the first visit we'll talk through the approach and what's realistic to expect.
How many hours do we have to book?
The minimum is four hours per visit, 16 to 20 hours a week — roughly $560 to $760 a week before any insurance. Costs and coverage has the full breakdown.
Does insurance cover this?
Traditional Medicare does not cover non-medical home care. Many Medicare Advantage plans do. We verify your specific plan before care begins.
How soon could someone start?
A free in-home visit within 48 hours, and care one to three days after that.
